In the sixth of a series of Trustee Q&A blogs, we speak to Karen Webster, who joined the board of The Charity Service in 2022
Can you tell us about your background and professional career?
I’ve spent the last 10 years of my career at The King’s Trust and currently lead on Philanthropy fundraising for the North region. Prior to this I spent many years in the cultural sector working in a range of marketing, business development and fundraising roles. I had a short stint in the “real world” but missed being in a values-driven role. I love working in the not-for-profit & charity sector and am proud to spend my days making a difference.
What initially interested you in becoming a trustee?
A few reasons! Personal and professional development is one. Being a charity Trustee is a brilliant way to learn more about charity governance, strategy, & operations, and further develop leadership skills. But it was also an opportunity to give back by volunteering my time to a good cause.
Why did you choose to join The Charity Service?
As a fundraiser you often only get to see one side of the charity fence. Becoming a Trustee at The Charity Service has given me the opportunity broaden my understanding of grant-making from the perspective of the funder, which has been so valuable. I am passionate about philanthropy and it’s potential to make the world a better place, so I felt The Charity Service was well aligned with my values.
What do you enjoy most about being a trustee at The Charity Service?
I have found it so rewarding being able to apply my skills and knowledge to a new role, without having to leave my existing one! I’ve loved learning more about the world of DAFs which is a fast-growing market here in the UK. I have also enjoyed contributing to the first NW Philanthropy Summit which took place in 2024 and joining the steering group for the NW Philanthropy Network, to encourage more conversation, collaboration and shared learning within the local philanthropy community. It’s great working alongside other like-minded Trustees.
What are The Charity Service’s key strengths?
The people – the team are brilliant! It’s also an organisation that doesn’t stay still and is always evolving to the changing philanthropy landscape. TCS takes a personalised relationship-driven approach with both our grantees and our DAF holders, which I think sets it apart from other funders and DAF providers.
Where would you like to see The Charity Service in five years’ time?
I’d love to see TCS disrupt the DAF market by becoming one of the UK’s top DAF providers.
What advice would you give to someone considering becoming a Trustee?
It’s such a rewarding and enriching experience. If you can spare the time and the headspace, and you find an organisation or cause that you are genuinely passionate about, don’t hesitate.
